FLOOD UPDATE - AUGUST 18, 2016
As school begins, many families are still living in tents and temporary shelters. Most counties have formed long range relief committees to help mitigate the recovery. Some areas have lots of supplies awaiting distribution which have been stalled by bureaucratic "red tape." Thousands of tons of debris have been removed, with thousands more waiting for the equipment necessary to remove it. Yet, in midst of all of these challenges there is a beacon of hope.
Site visits were made last week as the convention delivered a much needed mold abatement chemical, Shock Wave, to Rainelle, Richwood, Birch River and Clendenin. What was seen cannot be captured in either word or picture as the scope of the devastation is beyond description.
There is no doubt this will be a long-term recovery and work teams will be needed for many months. We must not grow weary in our well doing. We must not forget those in need as the news cycles change. We must partner with our sisters and brothers to rebuild communities: one life - one church - one home at a time until the work is done.
Lots of teams are needed of all skill sets. There is a great need for carpenters, electricians and other skilled builders. The West Virginia American Baptist Men Disaster Relief Team will gladly take new volunteers for any term of service.
Clear View Fellowship (Greenbrier-Raleigh) has acquired a warehouse for six weeks to collect good furniture and appliances for distribution. People in Greenbrier County are getting back into their homes and Clear View Fellowship is trying to help them. To donate, contact Roger Adams (304.545.7263) or David Bush (304.438.6311).
The convention continues to allocate funds from the generous gifts you have sent. This past week we:
- Purchased ten cases of Shock Wave and distributed to the flood areas
- Approved grant requests for
- Richwood First Baptist Church (Hopewell) for air conditioners
- Hurricane Baptist Church (Good Hope) for HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning)
- Send the Light Fellowship (Greenbrier-Raleigh) for recovery work
Funds continue to come in from individuals and churches. We will continue to work with those in the field to aid in the recovery efforts. You can apply for a grant by completing our form. Use the grant form here to submit your requests. Grant applications will be processed in a timely manner. Please mail to West Virginia Baptist Convention, Flood Relief Application, P.O. Box 1019, Parkersburg, WV 26102. Please call 800.879.9822 with questions.
